Match Of The Week: 02.03.07.

Febrary 6th, 2007.
ECW on Sci-Fi
Rob Van Dam vs. Elijah Burke

Honestly, the rest of the week didn't really impress me. There were some fun encounters in WSX, TNA and even some good spots on Smack Down!, but overall, it just felt too much like the same old/same old. I won't bother to bore you yet again with all of the details on matches which happened that I happen not to care about.
The good thing about this match on ECW on Sci-Fi was that it served a greater purpose. I believe, not only for the night but for WWECW on a whole.
With the help of Matt Striker as referee, Kevin Thorn managed to beat Tommy Dreamer. Monty Brown also scored a victory over a sore Balls Mahoney. RVD vs. Elijah Burke was the main event of this all, setting up the New Breed vs. the ECW Originals. This match served its purpose well based just on that account and should win just based on that, but there were also several other underlying factors to be considered.
Elijah Burke has a great athletic quality. This was showcased very well in this match with RVD. Burke needs to face other athletic guys like RVD if he wants to be seen as a true superstar.
Also, while the match itself was good and it helped further the storyline for the night and down the road (Leading probably to Wrestlemania 23), I can't help but wonder what will happen in the long run with this angle. It seems- if nothing else- WWE really is trying to usher out the Originals and bring in the New Breed. With that though, I'm fine.
Both RVD and Sabu have been reported as saying they won't renew their contracts with WWE when they expire (and they expire soon). On top of that, The Sandman is said to have been in some hot water with WWE brass. So Tommy Dreamer goes back to his non-wrestling role, Balls Mahoney and The Sandman go off somewhere to heel, and RVD and Sabu visit TNA. All of the Originals will be gone, more or less, and the New Breed will have won. Then WWECW can turn into something one step better than Velocity and showcase new stars as well as guys who could never get over on the main roster. Hey, they could call it NBW for all I care (New Breed Wrestling), but a name change would definitely be in order and then maybe- just maybe- this show could find the focus that it so desperately needs.
Still, not even looking at the greater possible good for this match, it stood out well for this week alone.
Coming up after next week we go to the The Stats: 30. Wow, has it been that long already?
